CHEMFLON - water, steam & oils up to + 230 ° C


CHEMFLON™ (FEPM, tetrafluoroethylene + propylene-copolymer) is an elastomer  offering excellent performance in the toughest and most arduous applications.

This copolymer outperforms many other elastomers even under the most demanding conditions. One of the excellent CHEMFLON™ properties is the resistance to water/steam and oils even at very high temperatures (up to 280°C)

CHEMFLON™ performs in the harshest conditions (e.g. oilfield exploration and production,  chemical petro-chemical and refining, aerospace and automotive industries.

Applications for the Heavy Duty Elastomer CHEMFLON™

  • Hot water and steam up to about 200°C
  • Water and antifreeze fluids (glycols)
  • Boiler feed water, salt water and condensate
  • Oils, mineral oils, petrol, crude oil, fats, bitumen and tar
  • Hydraulic fluids, heat transfer media up to 280°C
  • Brake fluids, antifreeze fluids

The elastomer CHEMFLON™ is particularly suitable for media combinations

Some media become more aggressive in a mixture with other media despite appearing to be compatible and will damage seals made of NBR, EPDM or FKM.

This problem also exists when the seal is required to separate two or more different media.
A CHEMFLON™ seal may solve this problem in a more cost-effective way than a FFKM seal.

Floating Ring Shaft Seals Exemplify the Usefulness of CHEMFLON™ Seals
to seal water, steam or aqueous solutions from quench oil, lubricating oil or heat carrier oil.

EPDM is not suitable because of the oil. Based on economic considerations, FEP-coated O-rings with all their disadvantages are then frequently the next choice.

CHEMFLON 1285 - the new FEPM quality, FDA compliant

FDA compliant seals at an exceptionally affordable price

KED Seals presents CHEMFLON® 1285, a new FEPM grade (based on Aflas by AsahiGlass) which is FDA compliant and meets all of these requirements. This material, which is also much more economical than expensive FFKM materials, is significantly superior to materials such as silicone, EPDM and FKM especially under aggressive conditions. The currently biocompatibility requirements according to the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) Class VI can be met as well.

Selecting the right seal can increase the average service life, avoiding expensive and unplanned downtime, dangerous leaks and contamination of product.

FDA compliant and biocompatible: Seals for the pharmaceutical and food industries

Pharmaceutical manufacturers primarily base their production systems on FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) guidelines in order to survive in this important market. This is why FDA compliant seals are indispensable.

However, companies in the biotechnology, food and beverage industries are facing increasingly higher standards with regard to their manufacturing processes. Hot water and steam resistance for applications such as Steam-In-Place (SIP), Clean-In-Place (CIP) and Water-for-Injection (WFI) with simultaneous resistance to chemicals and acids in particular are increasingly in demand, especially for new applications in sterile technology and food manufacturing.

3-A standard for reusable products

Due to the high purity requirements in the pharmaceutical industry, problematic additives in the materials are replaced in a targeted manner and bulking agents are selected in accordance with the FDA regulations and guidelines. CHEMFLON® 1285 also meets the reusability requirements of the 3-A sanitary standard.

Sanitary gaskets made from CHEMFLON® 1285 in accordance with FDA 21CFR177.2600 with FCN number are distinguished by

  • their resistance to a broad range of chemicals,
  • outstanding compression end set and
  • a thermal expansion coefficient which is low for fluororubbe

They are available or can be produced in all sizes for Tri-Clover® and Tri-Clamp® installations and O-rings in accordance with AS-568A, and naturally also in customer-specific geometries.

KEDFLON - up to - 40 ° C suitable for explosive decompression

KEDFLON – The New Perfluorinated Elastomer (FFKM)

KEDFLON is an elastic sealing material. It has the chemical resistance of PTFE and the elastic properties of rubber.

The material is ideally suited for applications involving aggressive media and/or extreme temperatures and for installations and equipment, such as floating-ring shaft seals, valves, pumps, mixers and fermenters.

  • Temperature range: - 20°C to 300 °C, short temperature spikes up to 320 °C
  • Resistant to hot water and steam
  • Low compression set
  • Applicable for applications involving explosive decompression
  • Extension of the application range using conventional elastomers
  • (NBR, FKM or others)
  • No plastic flow, no cold flow

KEDFLON - Applications

Below we name some applications, which call for the use of premium perfluorinated elastomers:

HNBR - improved thermal and chemical stability

Hydrogenated NBR (HNBR)

HNBR is suitable for applications requiring higher temperatures. Compared with NBR, HNBR tolerates higher temperature while maintaining the same resistance against mineral oils, motor oils, amine/oil mixtures, oxidizing petrol, lubricating oils, mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids, animal fats and plant oils, Diesel fuel as well as ozone, acidic gas, dilute acids, dilute alkaline solutions and also the new bio oils (biologically degradable oils).

At the same time, HNBR features high tensile strength and good resistance to abrasion.
Compared with conventional NBR (nitrile-butadiene rubber), hydrogenated HNBR shows significantly improved thermal and chemical resistance:

  • temperature range -40°C to +175°C
  • optimal properties in the upper permissible temperature range
  • increased resistance to steam, acid gases and ozone
  • low compression set
