FEPM is a fluoroelastomer out of tetrafluoroethylen and propylene with a fluorine content of approx. 54%, with outstanding resistance to petroleum products, steam and phosphate ester.

O-rings out of FEPM are an ideal choice for heat transfer oils, amines, acids and bases, as well as hot water and steam up to 230°C.

NBR O-rings compliant with international standards

O-rings out of nitrile rubber - for highly qualified applications and specialised requirements. The abbreviation NBR stands for Nitrile Butadiene Rubber. Nitrile rubber is produced through the copolymerisation of acrylonitrile (ACN) and 1,3-butadiene.

NBR copolymer acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber

  • good low-temperature flexibility down to -50°C
  • good ozone resistance and high abrasion resistance

NBR is the standard material used for hydraulic and pneumatic applications

NBR rubber is resistant to mineral oils, hydraulic oils in particular, grease, fuel and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, dilute acids and bases.
The broad range of applications of NBR is due in large part to its high abrasion resistance and stability as well as its good temperature resistance (-50 °C to +135 °C).

Suitable areas of application for NBR:

  • In applications involving oils, fats and waxes.
  • Applications in hot water up to 100 °C
  • NBR isn't suitable for use in concentrated acids (e.g. hydrochloric acid, formic acid), concentrated oxidising media (e.g. peracetic acid) as well as aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
  • Poor characteristics with regard to ozone, sunlight or weathering.

NBR compounds are superior to many other elastomers with regard to the compression end set, elongation strength and wear resistance. NBR is resistant to oil-based hydraulic fluids, fats, animal and plant based oils, flame retardants (HFA, HFB, HFC) and lubricants. Low temperature compounds are available specifically for use in contact with mineral oil based fluids. NBR can also meet other specific physical and chemical requirements, e.g. through the use of additives.

The acrylonitrile content of NBR affects its behaviour

The quality of an NBR compound is based on the percentage of acrylonitrile within the base polymer. The acrylonitrile content of NBR can vary between 18 % and 50 % and affects:

  • Swelling resistance in mineral oils, fats and fuels
  • Elasticity
  • Low-temperature flexibility
  • Gas permeability
  • Compression end set

EPDM O-rings compliant with international standards

EPDM is an elastomer (ethylene propylene copolymer) made from ethylene and propylene monomers, in some cases with a fraction of a third monomer (ethylene propylene terpolymer).

Broad and economical range of applications in process technology

EPDM O-rings are used extensively in the food and pharmaceutical industries, thanks to their outstanding resistance to water and aqueous systems as well as the high hot water and steam resistance. EPDM also has very good aging and ozone resistance properties.

The use of EPDM with products containing fats and oils is limited: Good properties with animal fats at low temperatures, not recommended for pure fats and oils at elevated temperatures.

Suitable applications for EPDM O-rings

  • in hot water and steam (continuously at 160 °C, intermittently at 180 °C)
  • Acids (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and phosphoric acid)
  • Bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide)
  • Ozone (40 °C, 1000 pphm)

EPDM compounds are not recommended for use in contact with fuel, mineral oils and lubricants or in hydrocarbon environments.

O-rings for aggressive media and high heat

They are used in applications where the seals are exposed to aggressive media or high heat, on equipment and machinery such as slide ring seals, valves, pumps, mixers and fermenters. Sealing elements made from perfluoroelastomer are the only ones which combine the virtually universal chemical resistance of PTFE with the typical sealing characteristics of natural rubber and its compression end set and creep resistance.

Perfluoroelastomers (FFKM) are terpolymers consisting of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) and a cure site monomer (CSM). Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) as the base monomer provides the chemical resistance, while the elastic properties are achieved through cross-linking with PMVE and perfluorinated cure site monomer (CSM). In many applications, there are very few or no alternatives to perfluoroelastomer. Our recommendation: KEDFLON®

    Traditionally produced from glued or vulcanized round cords. The Problem: A seam or join!  A seam is an exposed weak area. Such products can be used only when the application is not critical.

    The Solution for Critical Applications

    We supply O-rings, which can be used in the presence of gases, pressure, a vacuum or dynamic uses, no matter how large we make the diameter. Our O-rings are vulcanised in stages in a special procedure. Therefore, they do not have any seams.

    In this way, we produce heavy duty O-rings to any diameter and any cross section.

    There are no glue spots or double vulcanizations.

    • The cord strength is constant over the entire circumference.
    • There are neither chemical nor physical weak areas.

    The manufacturing process is so cost-effective, we are able to produce economically in small runs to meet any customer demand.

    After rapid depressurisation, gas may be trapped at the surface and inside of seals. In conventional sealing materials, this will cause bubbles and cracks and lead to leakages.

    Utilising a speciality grade of FKM fluoro-rubber can eliminate this cause of failure.
    The modified polymer structure in combination with a high modulus ensures that the seals are both decompression resistant and capable of resisting mechanical damage as a result of extremely large pressure drops.
    They also provide excellent extrusion resistance to gap extrusion caused by high pressure.

    FDA compliant seals at an exceptionally affordable price

    KED Seals presents CHEMFLON® 1285, a new FEPM grade (based on Aflas by AsahiGlass) which is FDA compliant and meets all of these requirements. This material, which is also much more economical than expensive FFKM materials, is significantly superior to materials such as silicone, EPDM and FKM especially under aggressive conditions. The currently biocompatibility requirements according to the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) Class VI can be met as well.

    Selecting the right seal can increase the average service life, avoiding expensive and unplanned downtime, dangerous leaks and contamination of product.

    FDA compliant and biocompatible: Seals for the pharmaceutical and food industries

    Pharmaceutical manufacturers primarily base their production systems on FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) guidelines in order to survive in this important market. This is why FDA compliant seals are indispensable.

    However, companies in the biotechnology, food and beverage industries are facing increasingly higher standards with regard to their manufacturing processes. Hot water and steam resistance for applications such as Steam-In-Place (SIP), Clean-In-Place (CIP) and Water-for-Injection (WFI) with simultaneous resistance to chemicals and acids in particular are increasingly in demand, especially for new applications in sterile technology and food manufacturing.

    3-A standard for reusable product

    Due to the high purity requirements in the pharmaceutical industry, problematic additives in the materials are replaced in a targeted manner and bulking agents are selected in accordance with the FDA regulations and guidelines. CHEMFLON® 1285 also meets the reusability requirements of the 3-A sanitary standard.

    Sanitary gaskets made from CHEMFLON® 1285 in accordance with FDA 21CFR177.2600 with FCN number are distinguished by

    • their resistance to a broad range of chemicals,
    • outstanding compression end set and
    • a thermal expansion coefficient which is low for fluororubbe

    They are available or can be produced in all sizes for Tri-Clover® and Tri-Clamp® installations and O-rings in accordance with AS-568A, and naturally also in customer-specific geometries. .

    O-Rings Coated with FEP (fluorinated ethylene-propylene) or PFA (perfluoroalkoxy)

    Chemical Resistance of FEP- and of PFA-Encapsulated O-Rings

    FEP- or PFA-encapsulated O-rings consist of an elastic core (e.g. made of fluoro rubber, FKM or silicone rubber (MVQ)) and a seamless coating of premium fluorinated plastics. The coat reliably seals, while the core ensures the uniform steady fit of the seal.

    By comparison with conventional seals made of synthetic elastomer, FEP- or PFA-encapsulated O-rings have extra advantages: FEP- or PFA-encapsulated O-rings are resistant against most solvents and chemicals and have a very small low friction coefficient.

    Chemical Resistance of FEP- and of PFA-Encapsulated O-Rings

    A coating of FEP or PFA seamlessly coats the respective O-ring made of fluoro rubber or silicone rubber. For the chemical resistance the thin coating of FEP or PFA is the relevant material.
    At normal temperatures, the coating guarantees the resistance against practically all chemicals.
    Diffusion

    The FEP coat of O-rings is only marginally permeable for gas and steam. This permeability increases with the temperature and contact area and decreases with the thickness of the coating. It is very low when the coatings are 0.3 mm thick or thicker.

    Encapsulated O-Rings:

    We are ready to supply you with the following encapsulated O-rings versions:
    O-rings with elastic cores made of FKM or silicone rubber and coated with FEP or PFA.
    FDA-compliant or metal spring core.

    For increased flexibility and ease of insertion we offer versions with a hollow FKM- or silicone rubber core,

    The sealing principle of X-rings

    The sealing principle of X-rings / quad rings largely corresponds to that of O-rings, but they have a double sealing action and are thus also called four-lobed seals. X-rings automatically act as double sealing elements:

     

    • Diametral compression in a rectangular groove
    • Sealing through system pressure
    • Acts in both directions

    Advantages: X-rings vs. O-rings

    • Lower diametral compression force required, resulting in less wear due to reduced friction
    • Better sealing performance through four sealing lips, which at the same time form a lubricant channel
